Sixth Form Attendance – Information for Parents and Carers

At Three Spires Sixth Form, we believe that strong attendance is essential for academic success, personal development, and safeguarding. This page explains how attendance works in Sixth Form and what parents and carers need to know.

Why attendance works differently in Sixth Form

Attendance in Sixth Form is more complex than in earlier years. Students move across the site, attend lessons in different locations, have supervised study periods, and some have agreed off-site privileges.

Despite this increased independence, attendance remains compulsory and is closely monitored to ensure students are safe, supported, and making progress.

What counts as attendance?

Students are expected to attend all timetabled sessions, including:

  • Subject lessons
  • Directed study periods
  • Aspire lessons
  • Maths and English resit lessons (where applicable)
  • Tutor time
  • Assemblies

All of the above are a required part of the Sixth Form offer and are compulsory.

How attendance is monitored

Attendance is recorded lesson by lesson, not just through morning and afternoon registration. This provides a more accurate picture of each student’s engagement and allows concerns to be identified early.

Parents and carers will receive regular attendance updates, and contact will be made if a student’s attendance becomes a concern.

Attendance concerns

If a student’s attendance begins to fall, this may lead to:

  • Contact with parents/carers
  • Meetings with Sixth Form staff
  • Attendance monitoring or support plans

Persistent low attendance may place a student’s Sixth Form place at risk.

Lateness and punctuality

Punctuality is essential. Students are expected to arrive on time to every timetabled session.

Where lateness continues to be a concern, we may introduce morning form time for all Sixth Form students to provide additional structure and support.
